On the last day of the ASun Championship today, the Lady Bucs came just short of a conference title to the Kennesaw State Owls. The Owls stormed to the top of the board with a total of 871, while ETSU held out with 875. Just under the Bucs with a total score of 880, Mercer University ranked in for third place. The interesting part of the day was Bucs golfer Gabriella Wahl winning the tournament’s individuals title over Mercer’s Lacey Fears. The two competed in sudden death for two-holes to see who would overcome the other for the overall win. Wahl now ranks with 2008 and 2010 Lady Bucs individual medalist Laura Jansone of Jurmala, Latvia. The women’s season is winding down to an end as the only other events the women could have competed in would have been the NCAA Regionals and Championships, which are held in May.
ASUN Women’s Golf
In the second day of competition at the Venetian Bay Golf Club in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., Gabriella Wahl and Sian Evans place first and second by the end of today’s round. Today, Wahl’s score was 1-over-par 73, rather than yesterday’s 5-under-par. Evans manage a 2-under-par 70 for the second round. The third round will be held Wednesday and will conclude the tournament. The last trophy brought home by the Lady Bucs was by the 2008 crew, and the Bucs hold tight near the top attempting another win at the division championships. If they win tomorrow, the girls will go to the NCAA Championships for the third time in the past five years.
Leading the team to a first place spot in the ASun for now, Gabrielle Wahl of Heidenheim, Germany palced 5-under-par 67 in a singles round. With this score, she tied record-making Laura Jansone, a former Lady Bucs golfer. Jansone made this same record-score in 2008. The 18-hole team also competed and suceeded in breaking the record in that program by a mere two strokes. The Lady Bucs are currently tied for the fourth-best program record score in ASun history. The real story here is the girls leading the four-time winning champs Stetson by four strokes and Kennesaw State by two. The second round of the ASun Championship began today, Tuesday, April 10 at 8 a.m. Follow me to keep up with what’s happening to the Lady Bucs during this tourny.
East Tennessee State University freshman Gabriella Wahl of Heidenheim, Germany was named ASun Golfer of the Week for the third time this season on March 28. She recently performed 7-under-par 209 in the John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate at the Eagle’s Landing Country Club. So far, it’s a season best for her. The next time she will be seen in action is in the ASun Championships in Deland, Fla on April 9.
